From Holdsworth road end

Atiwhakatu Track is a practical overnight introduction to tramping, running from the car park at the end of Mt Holdsworth Road to Atiwhakatu Hut. From Masterton, the road end is approximately 15 minutes by car: turn from State Highway 2 onto Norfolk Road, then follow it to the end. DOC

The route begins on gravel road past Holdsworth Lodge and crosses a bridge over Atiwhakatu Stream. After the bridge, the surface becomes a wide, flat track through mixed podocarp and broadleaf forest. Its gentler opening leads to Donnelly Flat, where a picnic area and camping places sit above access down to the stream. DOC

Up the stream valley

Beyond Donnelly Flat, the track follows the true right of Atiwhakatu Stream up the valley. The steady forest walk is interrupted by a slip that requires a small scramble, then by numerous side streams. The route’s well-formed character does not remove those practical obstacles, so allow extra time for young walkers or anyone new to tramping. DOC

One bridge stands out: a high, narrow wire swing bridge with a one person at a time crossing restriction. Some people may find it difficult. Steep drop-offs beside parts of the track also matter for families, even though the route is popular with new trampers. DOC

A hut in the clearing

Atiwhakatu Hut sits in a clearing, with a picnic table out front. It is a standard hut with 26 bunk beds, heating, mattresses and non-flush toilets. Its tap water is untreated and must be boiled. DOC

The listed distance is 7.2 km one way, with a listed walking time of 2-3 hr one way. The return follows the same valley route. Dogs are allowed if kept under control, but the Tararua Ranges are known for fast-changing weather, so warm and waterproof clothing belongs in the pack even when the forecast looks good. DOC

Plan for the actual pace

The walk combines an easy opening, streamside forest and a few concentrated challenges rather than sustained steep climbing. The swing bridge’s single-person limit, the slip scramble and side-stream crossings can shape the pace of a group. Families and less experienced walkers should plan for longer than the listed time and keep weather and drop-offs in mind. DOC
