A lake loop from Te Ponanga Saddle

The parking area is signposted on the south side of Te Ponanga Saddle, 11 km from Tūrangi off SH47. The track begins across the busy road, so take care at the crossing. From there, the path climbs gently to a junction. Turn right for the full circuit, starting with a short gravelled stretch before descending toward Five Minute Beach. DOC

A broad tree stump at Five Minute Beach offers a view across the water. The route then reaches Long Beach, sweeping along the lake’s eastern side and offering a place to pause or picnic; a toilet is located here. The sequence of shore stops gives the loop its shape, with the track alternating between forest and the lake edge. DOC

Shoreline details

Beyond Long Beach, the track follows the northern shore, where three of the lake’s four tributary streams enter. Rotopounamu usually has no visible outflow, though when water levels are low a small outflow can appear near the southern shore. Continuing along the circuit brings walkers to Ten Minute Beach, then back to the junction and downhill to the car park. DOC

The listed circuit is a 5 km loop taking 2 hr. There is also a shorter choice: from the road, climb to the junction and turn left for Ten Minute Beach, a 20 minute walk that makes a summer picnic and swimming stop. The full loop suits walkers who want the changing shoreline and forest; the shorter option focuses on one beach. DOC

Forest, crater and birdlife

The lake fills a crater on Mount Pihanga’s western side. Its name joins the Māori words roto, meaning lake, and pounamu, meaning greenstone. Around the water, podocarp, broadleaved and beech forests meet associated wetlands, creating several ecosystems in a compact circuit. DOC

Birdlife includes toutouwai/North Island robin, tītīpounamu/rifleman and kōmiromiro/tomtit, small passerines vulnerable to introduced predators. Project Tongariro and DOC work together on sustained biodiversity protection, including pest control. Dogs are not permitted, and drone use on conservation land requires a permit. DOC

Route facts

The junction makes the outing easy to tailor, while the road crossing and protected wildlife set practical boundaries for how visitors approach the lake. DOC
