Choose a Canadian chapter, not a borrowed total

Banff is the Great Divide’s historic starting point, while Adventure Cycling’s current Canadian network extends farther north to Jasper. A journey beginning in Banff and finishing in Elkford is a chosen section of that larger route. The Canada-section total cannot be used as its mileage. Route source

Select the actual current track before fixing daily distances. The maintainer describes named alternatives, including High Rockies and the Canmore Cutoff, which do different things. A ride assembled from their names without choosing their alignments can quietly become a different journey.

The first verifiable component: Spray River and Goat Creek

Parks Canada lists the Spray River–Goat Creek trail from Spray River West behind the Fairmont Banff Springs to Goat Creek parking above Canmore at 18.7 kilometres one way. It gives 435 metres of gain and 160 metres of loss for that component. These figures describe the local trail, not the complete ride to Elkford. Route source

The official description highlights an easily missed left fork after ten kilometres beside the Spray River, beyond the bottom of a short descent. The route crosses a bridge and rises beneath Mount Rundle toward Smith-Dorrien Road. Wet clay can make Goat Creek unsuitable for riding. Route source

Across Elk Pass into the upper valley

The Great Divide maintainer describes the Elk Pass powerline corridor. On the British Columbia side, Trails BC documents a seventy-six-kilometre Elkford–Elk Pass component linking the upper valley, forestry-recreation areas and the approach to Elkford near Round Prairie. Its Trans Canada Trail line is supporting geography, not proof that every Great Divide alternative follows an identical track. Route source Route source

Elkford changes the resupply picture after the more remote valley. Work backward from the provisions and accommodation actually chosen there, rather than assuming every named recreation site farther north has food or a staffed service. Route source

A route to assemble carefully

Northern Great Divide riding normally begins no earlier than late June or early July because of snow. Current route corrections and local reports matter where bridges and remote roads change. A note that flood damage sometimes occurs is not evidence of a closure today; it is a reason to obtain a dated report. Route source Route source

Choose an alignment before calculating the full Banff–Elkford distance: the Spray–Goat Creek opening and Elk Pass connection are components, not a complete track. Mark the permitted overnight stops on that selected line, with room to adjust for remote-road conditions.
