Take the boat before the ridge

The popular direction begins with the Gjende boat from Gjendesheim to Memurubu, then walks back toward Gjendesheim. National tourism and DNT descriptions put the traverse at roughly thirteen to fourteen kilometres, with around one thousand to eleven hundred metres of climbing. Their estimates differ enough that a rounded full-day plan is more honest than a falsely exact statistic. Route source Route source

This direction places the principal ridge scramble on the climb. Walking the other way changes that to a descent and puts a boat departure at the far end of the day. The transport arrangement is therefore part of choosing the route, rather than an afterthought.

Bjørnbøltjønn and Bandet before the famous ridge

From Memurubu, the route climbs above the Muru River toward Bjørnbøltjønn. Bandet brings the walker to the striking separation between Bessvatnet and Gjende, roughly four hundred metres lower. Glacial particles delivered by the Muru help give Gjende its blue-green colour. Route source

That relationship between two lakes is the distinctive subject of the walk. The celebrated photograph compresses a large height difference into one frame; walking toward it makes the ridge’s position in the landscape clearer.

The journey continues over Veslefjell

After the Besseggen ridge, Veslefjell reaches 1,743 metres. The route continues across the high ground, with a fork toward Gjendesheim or Bessheim about a kilometre beyond the high point. Clearing the narrow ridge does not finish either the distance or the navigation. Route source

The official descriptions reserve this outing for experienced hikers and allow most of a day; published time estimates range from six to eight hours in the narratives to seven to nine in one DNT listing. Stops, conditions and comfort on the scramble matter more than choosing the shortest estimate. Route source Route source

The boat season and snow must agree

The usual walking season depends on snow-free ground and operating boats. Do not convert a broad seasonal description into a promise that a particular October sailing exists. Check the actual boat date and the current mountain conditions together before booking accommodation or committing to the traverse. Route source

A lakeside visit to Gjendesheim remains a different outing. It can be appreciated without treating the full ridge as compulsory simply because the two-lake view is famous.
