The research behind the headline
The retrieved 14 August 2009 page carries a report attributed to Cheryl Critchley at the Herald Sun about Melbourne intersection observations connected to Monash University researchers. Its preliminary figures distinguish 5,420 observed cyclists from the 876 who faced a red signal; it reports that 93 of that second group crossed. Those are figures reported by the historical article, not a new survey by this magazine.
Read the denominator
The distinction matters: the share of people crossing against a signal depends on which group is being counted. The report also separates different crossing behaviours. It is an account from a particular place and period, rather than a measure of all cyclists. The surviving BikinginLA reference shows how the headline entered a wider discussion; neither it nor this summary validates every broader safety claim in the original.
