The third day in the mountains
The retrieved 11 November 2009 dispatch reports seven withdrawals from the fifty-nine starting teams as the race moved through the Lousã, Açor and Estrela mountains. It discusses Orion Health and Nike/Beaver Creek among teams still competing near the front. Its dramatic headline describes attrition in the field, not an announcement of deaths.
An interim report
The account combines information about withdrawals with observations of difficult terrain and local hospitality, including a meal offered at Fajão. Those details belong to this stage of the race. The organiser’s final report gives the separate championship outcome; an early position should not be read as a finishing classification. Portugal XPD
