Cross the estuary before following the coast

From the Harvey Road end at Mārahau, the Abel Tasman Coast Track crosses the estuary causeway and works through open country into beech and kānuka forest. Anchorage is 12.4 kilometres away, with a four-hour one-way estimate. Returning on foot doubles the walking to 24.8 kilometres. Route source Route source

That arithmetic makes the return arrangement one of the first choices. A booked overnight, a confirmed water taxi and a complete walking return produce three very different days, even though they share the same outward route.

The bays are separated by inland walking

The track passes the Tinline Bay area, with a short nature-walk option, then continues by Guilbert Point and Apple Tree Bay. Yellow Point and the inland gullies follow before views over Rākauroa/Torrent Bay and the descent to Anchorage. It is a forest-and-headland walk punctuated by beaches, rather than uninterrupted walking on sand. Route source Route source

The bay names give the stage useful subdivisions. They also help a day walker resist the assumption that the next golden beach is always only a few minutes farther along the shore. The route may climb or turn inland between visible pieces of coastline.

Anchorage is a destination with its own booking

Overnight stays in the huts and camps require advance bookings year-round. Anchorage Hut has bunks but no gas cooking facilities or lighting; visitors need the appropriate stove, fuel and light. Backcountry Hut Passes and Tickets are not valid at Anchorage Hut. Route source Route source

A water-taxi arrival or collection is a provider arrangement. Confirm the actual time, location and service before relying on a one-way walk. The existence of water access to the bay does not promise a last-minute boat whenever a walker arrives.

Keep the next stage’s tide crossing separate

Torrent Bay’s tidal crossing belongs to the onward stage toward Bark Bay. It should not be imported into the Mārahau–Anchorage description as though every first-stage visitor must ford it. The full Coast Track has several distinct tidal and logistical questions, each attached to a particular place. Route source

The older official track guide retained here is useful for the order of bays and headlands. Current DOC pages provide the booking rules, while the selected boat operator provides the live transport plan. Route source Route source
