Start at The Divide on Milford Road
Key Summit begins at The Divide, about eighty-five kilometres along Milford Road from Te Anau. The first hour follows the Routeburn Track through forest to a signed junction. From there the summit branch climbs for roughly another twenty minutes before the alpine nature walk. Route source
DOC’s route page gives 3.4 kilometres one way, while its Fiordland brochure spells out the return distance as 6.8 kilometres and about three hours. The difference is simply the direction of measurement. The road stop is the beginning of a proper walk, rather than a viewpoint a few steps from the car. Route source Route source
A small landscape above the trees
The vegetation changes from beech forest to subalpine scrub, tarns and bogs. The nature walk gives these small features a place alongside the broad views toward the Humboldt and Darran mountains. It is worth looking at the ground as well as the horizon. Route source
Stay on the formed surfaces through this delicate country. The attraction is precisely the close arrangement of water, plants and old glacial landforms; widening a path to obtain a different reflection damages that small-scale landscape. Route source
A summit once under much more ice
DOC describes the former Hollyford glacier overtopping this area by about five hundred metres, with ice splitting toward the Eglinton and Greenstone valleys. The high viewpoint therefore sits within the story of a much larger glacial system, rather than above a landscape that always looked as it does now. Route source
Use the visible valleys to think about those directions. The setting becomes more legible when the viewpoint is understood as a divide between routes once taken by ice, rather than only a high place from which mountains can be photographed.
Lake Howden is the other branch
At the signed junction, continuing on the Routeburn descends toward Lake Howden instead of taking the Key Summit climb. Earland Falls lies farther along again. Those destinations form separate outings with extra walking; they are not successive stops within the summit’s three-hour return figure. Route source
Return to The Divide by the same forest approach. Because the trailhead is on Milford Road, the condition and operation of that road remain part of reaching it, even when the walking plan itself is compact. Route source
