A system made for changing ground

ASTRONEER places its expedition in the 25th century’s Intergalactic Age of Discovery, where harsh environments and rare finds give exploration its purpose. The solar system contains seven celestial bodies, each with distinct geography and surface and cave biomes. Exploration can extend from spherical surfaces down toward planetary cores, so a visit can shift from reading a horizon to changing the ground beneath it. The Terrain Tool is central to that shift. It can dig, collect, shape, build, and color terrain, making the route itself something the player can modify. That turns geography into a working material: a slope can be approached as an obstacle to cross, a deposit as something to gather, or terrain as a basis for construction. Official Steam description

Infrastructure follows the expedition

Bases use a modular snapping system, with crafting stations, power plants, resource harvesters, automation systems, and railway facilities among the available infrastructure. Those pieces make a base more than a shelter: it can support production and movement as the surrounding area is explored. The developer describes terrain manipulation, vehicles, and bases as connected ways to solve problems creatively, rather than isolated features. Official Steam description Official game website

The worlds also provide reasons to range beyond infrastructure. Mysterious structures, artifacts, and unusual communications invite investigation, while varied surface and cave biomes change what an explorer is dealing with. The game supports solo play and online groups of two to four, so the same terrain-focused system can be approached alone or with others. Official Steam description

Slope routes and tether limits

The Hoverboard is designed for crossing surfaces in either direction along slopes. Away from tether lines, power and oxygen become considerations, so the board’s freedom across the ground sits alongside the need to think about support and supplies. It is a traversal choice for surface terrain rather than a blanket answer to every kind of passage. System Era: new traversal vehicles

The VTOL offers a contrasting view: it hovers, surveys resources from above, crosses difficult ground, and can navigate vertical cave spaces. Hydrazine fuel is part of operating it. From the air, a player can assess terrain and resources; inside a cave, the same vehicle addresses a more vertical kind of route. System Era: new traversal vehicles

Desolo and Vesania as working destinations

EXO Dynamics investigations give Desolo and Vesania a role beyond their scenery: missions on those worlds lead to vehicle schematics. The compass marks the relevant mission sites and EXO Caches. Those pointers connect an expedition’s destination with a specific equipment objective. System Era: new traversal vehicles

The resulting expedition loop is built from choices about terrain, infrastructure, and movement. A player can reshape a path, establish a base around useful facilities, and choose between a slope-crossing board or a fuelled hovering craft that can survey overhead and enter vertical spaces. Seven bodies and their distinct biomes keep those decisions grounded in changing environments rather than one uniform landscape.
