Mirai’s research team
Scientist Mirai joins a research team in Beyond Blue’s near future. Eight dives involve tracking sea creatures, interacting with marine life, and using research technology. Observation gives the journey a purpose beyond reaching another location. Official Steam description
E-Line’s Steve Zimmermann describes BBC Studios approaching the developers after Never Alone. Blue Planet II footage helped shape the project, while scientists joined development. Mirai’s fictional expedition grew from collaboration with people studying the real sea. Publisher research explanation
Tracking, observing, investigating
Tracking and interaction make marine animals participants in the dives. The team’s work provides a narrative context for encountering them, connecting exploration with inquiry. The game presents these activities through Mirai’s story rather than asking players to conduct an actual scientific mission. Official Steam description
Photo Mode adds filters and camera settings for framing underwater images. It provides a different form of attention from tracking: a player can make a picture of what is encountered, alongside the research activities that organize movement through the ocean. Official Steam description
Real science alongside fiction
Sixteen Ocean Insights mini-documentaries feature scientists and original footage. They create a nonfiction strand beside Mirai’s fictional expedition, connecting themes in the game with actual researchers. The dives and the films offer related, but distinct, ways of encountering ocean life. Official Steam description
A resident scientist participated in team meetings and worked with artists and animators on animal accuracy. That development account gives the creatures a specific research connection without establishing that every fictional instrument or expedition detail is already available outside the game. An ocean under observation
The project addresses pollution and changes affecting animal migration and food. Zimmermann describes presenting those challenges while encouraging hope and engagement. Research and observation provide the route into these themes, rather than treating the ocean only as a striking backdrop. Publisher research explanation
Music also carries a connection to expeditions. Researchers described listening to Miles Davis during long descents, influencing the soundtrack choices. It is a small example of how the developers drew on the working experience of ocean specialists alongside their scientific knowledge. Publisher research explanation
