A corridor of different kinds of water

Scottish Canals describes the Great Glen Canoe Trail as a sixty-mile canoe or sea-kayak journey, normally taking three to five days. Its combination of canal sections and large open lochs requires more than the ability to paddle a sheltered cut. Open-water experience is part of the authority’s description of the route. The linked route map recommends practical inland endpoints at Banavie and Muirtown, avoiding additional difficult portages at the seaward ends. Those launch choices change the exact total, so the whole-corridor distance should not be presented as a surveyed measure of every possible start and finish. Route source

Learn the lochs in order

From the Fort William side, the route works toward Gairlochy and Loch Lochy, then South Laggan and Loch Oich. Fort Augustus precedes the long Loch Ness section, followed by Loch Dochfour, Dochgarroch and the approach to Inverness. Route source

That sequence makes the landscape more useful than a single line across a national map. Locks require carries; open lochs create exposed crossings or shore journeys; a sheltered canal reach does not predict the water waiting around the next stage. Route source

Make the land stages part of the journey

The authority asks paddlers to register their trip. Designated informal pitches have signed capacities and single-night limits, with stoves rather than fires. Scottish Canals encourages commercial accommodation to reduce pressure on the corridor. A grassy piece of towpath should not automatically be treated as an authorised campsite. Route source

The historical map locates places such as Urquhart Castle, Foyers and Bona Lighthouse, but its older contact, facility and pitch details need current confirmation. It is useful as a geographical overview, not a substitute for the present authority’s arrangements. Route source

A specific access change this autumn

The current works programme lists Dochgarroch public car park closed from 26 October to 6 November 2026 during Dochfour Burn dredging, with a signed diversion. That is a concrete reason to rethink a launch, collection or support meeting there during this edition’s period. Route source

Later works in the published programme have their own dates. Check the actual planned journey against the current notices and arrange a shuttle that can use the agreed access points, rather than leaving the final drive to be improvised after several days on the water.
