A short battlefield circuit

The Tour Road offers a compact way to explore Guilford Courthouse National Military Park by bicycle. The route begins at the Visitor Center parking lot, crosses Old Battleground Road, continues through the park, then loops toward Old Battleground Road and New Garden Road. The Tour Road is one way, so the circuit’s direction matters when planning the ride. NPS

As the road passes through the battlefield, monuments honor the people who fought at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Beyond them, views open onto a forest that is now peaceful. The hills are part of the historical setting: cyclists encounter terrain similar to that traversed by British soldiers during the battle. NPS

Pavement and hills

The Tour Road is a paved vehicle road, 25 feet wide. Its surface makes for a straightforward bicycle outing, but the route is not uniformly easy: steep inclines between Tour Stop 5 and Tour Stop 7 may challenge less experienced cyclists. Riders choosing this circuit should account for those climbs and the shared road conditions when deciding how much effort to bring. NPS

The stated riding distance is 2.25 miles around the park. The road’s short length makes it possible to focus on the monuments and changing forest views, while the one-way layout and hills mean it is still worth paying attention to where the circuit bends and climbs. NPS

Ride with care

Cars, pedestrians, and deer may be present. Cyclists ride on the right side with cars; the left side is reserved for pedestrians, and riders must yield to them. Pedestrians may walk on all sides of the road, so expect people beyond the left edge as well. Stay below the posted 20 mph speed limit and wear a helmet. NPS

The Tour Road meets Old Battleground and New Garden Roads, where riders should look both ways at intersections. E-bikes are allowed on roads, parking areas, and trails open to traditional bicycles. The tour road is a paved vehicle road, so the ride involves attention to traffic as well as the battlefield landscape. NPS

Plan around gate hours

The Battlefield Tour Road gates open at 8:30AM and close at 5:00PM. Vehicles must be removed from the Visitor Center parking lot and Tour Road at closing. Biking is permitted on roads after hours, and after-hours parking is available in the lot at the intersection of New Garden and Old Battleground. These details matter if the ride is planned outside the gate schedule. NPS

The route is listed for winter, spring, summer, and fall. Keep dogs off bicycle tethers: the park warns that the large hills can lead to injury for a person or dog running alongside. NPS
