A city route with water at its center
The route begins at Griffiss Business Park and ends at Bellamy Harbor Park, where it meets the larger Erie Canal Trail. Fort Stanwix National Monument sits at the center, placing the ride in the middle of Rome’s Mohawk River and Erie/Barge Canal landscape. Parking is available at either end and at the monument, so riders can choose a point-to-point outing or begin near the landmark. NPS
This is a ride through a working city’s layered history as much as a riverside outing. The Erie Canal began in Rome to replace the trail Fort Stanwix was built to protect. Historic markers along the way describe trade, commerce and westward expansion, giving the route a sequence of stops that connects the canal corridor to the fort’s earlier purpose. NPS
Surface and crossing choices
Much of the system is paved, and the connecting Mohawk River trail is paved as well. Trails on park grounds are described as paved with gravel, with gradual grade changes of less than 30%. Benches appear at regular intervals on the main sections, making it easier to pause without leaving the route. NPS
Some street intersections join the larger trail sections and may be challenging for visitors with mobility needs. The path is shared by walkers and cyclists, so riders should account for pedestrians. Comfortable walking shoes suit a visit on foot; hiking boots are generally unnecessary. NPS
Bellamy Harbor and summer services
At Bellamy Harbor Park, cyclists traveling the Erie can find a welcome center with showers, restrooms and laundry during summer months. That makes the endpoint a practical place to finish a longer canal journey, while also giving local riders a clear turnaround or stopping point. The welcome center’s seasonal availability matters: the trails are open year-round, but those facilities are not. NPS
A kayak launch is available in summer for seeing the river from the water. It offers a distinct way to extend time at the waterfront, though the bike route itself already links the river setting with Fort Stanwix and the canal corridor. NPS
Planning for changing conditions
The route is open in winter, spring, summer and fall. Conditions and temperatures can vary across a season or even a day, so dress in layers and check local weather before setting out. In warmer months, the combination of trail riding, historic markers and Bellamy Harbor’s seasonal services makes the central stretch especially convenient for cyclists. NPS
For a shorter visit, parking near Fort Stanwix puts the monument and central trail system within reach; choosing either endpoint instead frames the outing around the full connection between Griffiss Business Park and Bellamy Harbor. Keep pets leashed and dispose of waste properly. NPS
