A full circuit at the lake’s edge
Rim Drive makes a 33 mile circuit around Crater Lake, beginning and ending at Park Headquarters in the listed waypoints. It is physically demanding: steep hills and high elevation can make even experienced riders pause at the road’s thirty overlooks and pull-outs. The route offers a slower view of the lake than most visitors take, but the effort is inseparable from that perspective. NPS
The named waypoints give the ride a changing rhythm. From Park Headquarters, the road reaches Rim Village, then Discovery Point and Watchman Trailhead before North Junction and Cleetwood Cove. Later come Wineglass, Skell Head and Cloudcap, followed by Kerr Notch, Dutton Ridge and Vidae Falls on the return toward headquarters. NPS
High points and hard climbs
The waypoint elevations show how much the setting shifts: Rim Village is listed at 7100 feet, Watchman Trailhead at 7350 feet and Cloudcap at 7700 feet. The route’s climb figures also vary markedly between segments, including 650 feet from Park Headquarters to Rim Village and 600 feet from Skell Head to Cloudcap. Riders unaccustomed to altitude may find breathing difficult, and the trip may take longer than expected. NPS
Road hazards include steep downhill speeds, rocks, animals, potholes and heavy traffic. Park roads seldom have shoulders and there are no bike lanes. The park says only cyclists experienced with auto traffic should consider riding here; the narrow, steep, winding three mile road between Park Headquarters and Rim Village is specifically discouraged for cycling. NPS
Rules, water and season
Cyclists follow the rules for automobile traffic, including speed limits and stop signs, and ride single file. Helmets are strongly recommended for all and required for riders under the age of 16. Bicycles are not permitted on park trails. E-bikes are permitted on the roads. NPS
Water is available only at Rim Village, Park Headquarters and Mazama Village, so those named places matter when planning a demanding day. The park recommends planning trips for July, August and September because road conditions are unfavorable to cyclists most of the year and many roads close during the long winter. NPS
A quieter East Rim option
Two Saturdays a year, East Rim Drive closes to vehicle traffic, opening 24 miles of scenic roadway to bicyclists and pedestrians without ordinary vehicle noise and traffic. That event offers a different scale of ride from the full Rim Drive circuit and changes the traffic context, though administrative vehicles may still use the road when it is closed to motor vehicles. NPS
For most visits, the full circuit is a serious road ride rather than a casual park path. Bright clothing, single-file riding and careful attention to blind curves and narrow sections address the conditions described by the park; choose the vehicle-free East Rim day if its route and timing fit better.
