Begin at the old ferry landing
The White Bluffs North Trail starts at the White Bluffs Boat Launch beside the Columbia River. The launch occupies the former White Bluffs Ferry Landing, a remnant of the town that once stood here. Look for a grove of large trees just before the boat launch: the popular trail begins there, unmarked, and climbs immediately northwest onto the bluffs. NPS
The Hanford Reach National Monument was once part of the Hanford Site security perimeter, which kept the landscape from development. From the trail, broad views take in rolling dunes, wildlife, and relics associated with plutonium production during the Manhattan Project and Cold War. The outing combines open-country walking with a visible industrial history. NPS
Bluff country gives way to dunes
From the grove near the boat launch, the path immediately climbs northwest onto the bluffs. After 2 miles, the landscape changes into sand dunes. Continue an additional 1.5 miles to reach the northernmost dune; that extension makes the outing longer while keeping the changing terrain in view. NPS
These are not developed trails: the path is narrow and unmarked, with steep uphill climbs and descents across uneven terrain. Closed-toed rugged shoes are recommended for the rocky sections. Visitors should be prepared to follow the landscape rather than rely on trail markers. NPS
Choose the season carefully
Spring and fall generally bring more moderate temperatures and conditions. Summer can be extremely hot, and there are no shade trees or available water along the route. The source recommends plenty of water and light, breathable clothing in spring and summer; for visits between April and September, it also recommends a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. NPS
This exposed route is best approached with enough water for the full outing and clothing suited to steep, rocky ground. The listed seasons are winter, spring, and fall, though the trail description also gives precautions for warm-weather visits. NPS
Reach the Columbia River start
From Richland, take WA-240 W for 29 miles, continue onto WA-24 E for 5.4 miles, then turn right at the WA-243 intersection. Continue for 19 miles, turn right at the marked monument sign, and follow signs to White Bluffs Boat Launch for 5.7 miles to a parking lot near the river. NPS
The route is listed for morning and afternoon visits. With no developed tread, shade, or water, the practical choice is to make the turn-around point fit the group’s comfort on steep terrain and the conditions of the day. NPS
