A river corridor through the city

The Mission Reach Hike & Bike Trail follows the San Antonio River through south San Antonio, from the River Walk to Mission Espada. Its paved path passes through historic neighborhoods and farmland, creating a continuous outdoor route with missions as its anchor points. NPS

The trail connects all five missions: the Alamo, Mission Concepción, Mission San José, Mission San Juan, and Mission Espada. The missions sit a short distance off the main river path. The NPS description identifies dedicated paved connectors to the missions as pedestrian-only, so use those links on foot and follow posted access signs. Each mission is about 2–3 miles from the next, making a single segment a practical outing. NPS

Landmarks shape the journey

Beyond the missions, viewpoints include the Espada Aqueduct, San Juan Dam, and Arbol de la Vida. These stops give the route a changing sequence of built history and river scenery rather than one uninterrupted stretch of pavement. Consult the river map before starting to choose a segment and orient yourself among the access points. NPS

The river corridor also supports wildlife viewing. Egrets, cormorants, osprey, and red-eared slider turtles are among the species noted along the route; prickly pear and pecan trees add recognizable plant life. NPS

Pick a segment or commit to the return

Walk or bike between neighboring missions, or take on the longer journey from end to end. The trail is not a loop: plan to retrace the route or arrange a car ride back. Bikes can be brought along, and San Antonio Bike Share stations are available at each mission site. NPS

The trail is paved throughout and described as an easy walk or ride suitable for children. Ramped access points, water fountains, restrooms, and accessible public buses at multiple trail locations make it possible to shape the outing around mobility and how far you want to go. NPS

Heat, hours, and trail etiquette

The route is open year-round from sunrise to sunset. Summer can be extremely hot, and much of the trail has little shade, so carry water and sun protection in every season. Leashed pets are allowed on a leash 6 ft or under; owners must clean up after them. NPS

For a compact visit, choose one mission-to-mission segment and decide in advance how you will return. For a longer day, the river’s chain of missions and viewpoints offers frequent reasons to pause, while the linear layout keeps the essential planning question in view: where will the outing end? NPS
