Start beside Brandywine Falls
Begin at Brandywine Falls Trailhead, where parking spaces are limited. The route is best done early or late in the day to avoid midday crowds. Follow the path toward the falls, then turn left onto the trail just before the boardwalk to enter the clockwise loop. NPS
The hike combines sections of several trails, so consult the map at the bulletin board near the restrooms or use the NPS App if you did not get a trail map at the visitor center. Sturdy walking shoes suit the hilly route, whose unpaved surface is rocky in places. Stay on marked trails to protect the fragile habitat. NPS
Down into the gorge
The clockwise route drops into the gorge, crosses a footbridge above the creek, and climbs the opposite side. Keep bearing right at trail intersections. The descent and return climb make the loop’s 160-foot elevation change felt across a compact outing; footing and junction choices matter more here than distance alone. NPS
After passing the Inn at Brandywine Falls, cross back over the creek and over the falls, then turn right at the small bulletin board. The path leads to the falls viewing boardwalk and back to the parking lot. For a lower view, signs direct visitors down approximately 80 steps to a lower viewing deck. NPS
Keep the short loop or extend it
The loop from the falls trailhead is 1.5 miles roundtrip. The trailhead has restrooms and seasonally available drinking water. The Brandywine Falls area closes at dusk, so plan to finish before closing and carry water if the seasonal supply is unavailable. NPS
Longer approaches from Boston change the outing substantially. From Boston Mill Visitor Center, the route uses a pedestrian bridge over the Cuyahoga River, the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, a connector toward Stanford House, and Stanford Trail before joining the gorge loop. That roundtrip is approximately 5.7 miles, with a cumulative 440-foot change in elevation. NPS
Access and alternatives
The unpaved gorge route is not wheelchair accessible. Wheelchair users can reach the upper Brandywine Falls viewing area by the short path from the parking lot to the boardwalk. Audio description is available for exhibit panels along the trail. Leashed pets are permitted on park trails with leashes 6 feet long or less, though pets are not allowed in park buildings. NPS
The shorter loop suits visitors seeking the gorge, creek crossing, and falls without a longer approach; starting from Boston adds the river bridge, towpath, and Stanford House connections. Both choices reach the same marked gorge loop. The boardwalk returns short-loop walkers to Brandywine Falls Trailhead; those starting at Boston must also retrace the Stanford Trail and towpath connections to their original start. NPS
