Begin beside Staley Cabin

Kirby Nature Trail starts on FM 420 beside historic Staley Cabin in the Turkey Creek Unit, about 7 miles north of Kountze. From US 69/287, travel east on FM 420 for 2½ miles to the trailhead parking lot. Beyond the kiosk, a wooden ramp descends to the first junction, where turning left begins the clockwise inner loop. NPS

The inner loop is 1½ miles, mostly flat, and wide enough for a wheelchair. Its gentle downhill start leads beneath beech, magnolia, and loblolly pine, with several wooden bridges along the way. The route uses boardwalk and dirt; both can become slippery after heavy rain, a practical reason to adjust expectations after wet weather. NPS

Add the cypress slough

At a junction, the cypress loop branches left from the inner route. This 0.3-mile circuit brings hikers to a slough of large bald cypress trees and their distinctive knees. When water is high, a high-water bypass lets visitors skip this loop and remain on the broader outing. NPS

Back on the inner loop, the path follows Village Creek. At the next junction, the right fork returns south toward the trailhead. The left fork starts the 0.9-mile outer loop, passing through a picnic area beside an iron bridge over Village Creek before curving back to meet the inner loop. Combining the three circuits makes a 2½-mile loop. NPS

A larger creek-side outing

Walkers can extend beyond Kirby by crossing the Village Creek iron bridge to the Turkey Creek Trail. After 0.8 miles, a second iron bridge crosses Turkey Creek; the Sandhill Loop begins on its east side. That 1.4-mile loop threads tall longleaf pines and scattered cacti, then returns to the bridge and the Turkey Creek route. NPS

Following the Turkey Creek Trail back south reconnects with Kirby and the trailhead. The preserve describes the combined outing as a 4½- or 5½-mile loop and out-and-back combination, adding 3 miles roundtrip to the Kirby route. This extension changes the character of the walk from short forest loops to a longer sequence of creek crossings and pine country. NPS

Choose for conditions

Kirby’s linked options make it possible to keep the outing to the accessible inner circuit, add the cypress slough when water allows, or continue onto the bridge-linked trails. Pets must be on a 6-foot leash. The trail information lists the area for all four seasons; after heavy rain, slick boardwalk and dirt surfaces deserve particular attention. NPS
