From the visitor center

The route begins inside the visitor center, where hikers check in before setting out. From there, a paved path climbs steeply toward the Lower Cliff Dwelling. Visitor-center parking, accessible restrooms, and a water-fill station make this the practical place to prepare before the exposed ascent. NPS

The climb is short in distance but sustained enough to shape the outing: the trail rises 350 feet over a 1-mile roundtrip. Benches with backs offer places to pause, though they are fully exposed, with little to no shade. Bring water and check the weather before starting. NPS

A route across the basin’s edge

As the path gains height, views open toward Roosevelt Lake and the cliff dwelling itself. Desert plants line the route, while exhibits explain the people who lived here and the surrounding area. The landscape’s views and the interpretive stops arrive together, making this more than a direct climb to the structure. NPS

The pavement is uneven and cracked in places, and sharp corners add to the challenge of the steep grade. Manual wheelchairs are not recommended. Electric wheelchairs can be used, but the grade, corners, and stairs at the dwelling call for careful consideration. NPS

Inside the Lower Cliff Dwelling

At the end of the trail, visitors can walk through portions of the dwelling and look across the basin below. Stairs occur throughout the structure. The walls should not be used for support, and touching surfaces, leaning on walls, or entering closed areas is not permitted; hiking poles, a stick, or a companion’s support may help with steps. NPS

The monument is a cultural site, so stay on the main trail and leave plants, rocks, and artifacts where they are. Pets may accompany hikers on the trail but cannot enter the visitor center or dwelling; check in without a pet to learn where to start. NPS

Timing the visit

The trail is available year-round, but hours vary and closures can follow excessive heat, lightning, bee activity, fire activity, or flooding. In June-August, hikers must begin before 12 noon; in September-May, they must begin before 4 pm. Summer heat and full exposure make water and a weather check especially important. NPS

For visitors who prefer not to take the steep route, the cliff dwelling can be viewed through binoculars in the parking lot; the wheelchair-accessible museum and park film offer additional context. NPS
