A rim route made of choices

The Rim Trail tracks the edge of Bryce Amphitheater from Bryce Point in the south to Fairyland Point in the north, connecting Inspiration, Sunset, and Sunrise Points along the way. Rather than requiring one fixed outing, it lets walkers start at any of those five viewpoints and choose how much of the rim to cover. The park describes the full Bryce-to-Fairyland stretch as 5.5 miles; the distance walked depends on the chosen endpoints. NPS

Parking is available at each listed trailhead. Bryce, Inspiration, Sunset, and Sunrise Points have shuttle access; Fairyland Point does not. Oversized vehicles are not permitted in those parking areas when the shuttle is operating, except at Fairyland. The varied access makes endpoint choice a practical part of planning: a shuttle-served point can help shape a shorter walk, while Fairyland requires its own transport plan. NPS

Pick a segment for the day

The listed links between viewpoints help make the route concrete: Bryce to Inspiration is 1.5 miles, Inspiration to Sunset is 0.7 mile, Sunset to Sunrise is 0.5 mile, and Sunrise to Fairyland is 2.8 miles. These are connecting trail segments, not round trips. The park gives an overall distance range of 1.0 to 11.0 miles depending on how far a visitor chooses to walk, and an approximate time range of 1 hour to 7.5 hours. NPS

For a short outing, the park identifies the Sunset-to-Sunrise stretch as its easiest hike. It is 0.5 mile between the two points, with an elevation gain of 34 feet; walking out and back makes a very easy 1-mile walk. This section is paved and pet friendly, offering a clear choice for visitors seeking a firmer surface and a limited commitment. NPS

Expect the surface to change

The route’s surface reflects the park’s natural terrain. The Sunrise–Sunset section is concrete, while other portions are described as firm native sediment. Only parts of the trail are considered accessible, so travelers should select a segment with the surface and grade they can manage rather than assume the entire rim has the same conditions. NPS

The Rim Trail is rated easy to moderate overall, depending on the portion walked. Restrooms are available year-round at Sunset Point; the General Store near Sunrise Point has them seasonally. Water-fill stations are available at the Sunset Point restroom year-round, with additional seasonal stations at Sunset Point and the General Store. Those services can help determine where to begin or end a longer section. NPS

Account for winter and pets

In winter, the 1.5-mile section from Bryce Point to Inspiration Point is regularly closed. Pets are allowed only on the paved trail between Sunrise and Sunset Points, where the park identifies the surface as pet friendly; service animals are allowed in national parks. For a winter visit or a walk with a pet, that short paved segment is the supported choice, while other route sections call for checking conditions and access before setting out. NPS
