Find the starting point

Park near the Grandview Visitor Center and walk toward the Main Overlook. The trail begins beside benches bordering a wide path to the left of the overlook. The short approach from the parking area is described as about a football field in distance, so runners can use it to warm up before starting the route. NPS

From the benches, follow the Grandview Rim Trail with the Gorge on your right. The path tracks the perimeter and leads to a sign for North Overlook, where the route leaves the rim and enters a more forested section. This transition is the key navigational choice: keep the gorge beside you on the opening stretch, then follow the marked trail inland. NPS

From rim to Turkey Spur

When the trail reaches the road, stay on the trail to the right. It becomes winding and changes elevation by about 460 feet before ending in the Turkey Spur parking lot. The route is an out-and-back, so the usual run turns around at the lot and retraces the same path to the Main Overlook area. NPS

Turkey Spur offers an optional stop at a rock outcropping next to the lot: 150 steps climb to three additional viewpoints into the Gorge. The described running route ends at the parking lot, so treat the steps as a separate choice in how to spend time at the turnaround rather than part of the quoted trail distance. NPS

Choose pace and footing

The route’s surface mixes hard-packed soil, rocks, and smaller dirt compositions. Some segments near the start are accessible, but divots and dips appear within .2 of a mile from the starting point; the trail is not entirely accessible. That early change makes footwear and attention to footing relevant even before the route reaches its winding forest section. NPS

The stated duration ranges from 20 minutes to 2 hours depending on the runner. Daylight hours are recommended so runners are visible to hikers and vehicles in the parking areas. Leashed pets are allowed if the leash is less than 6 feet, and owners should pick up waste. NPS

Seasonal conditions shape the run

The trail is open year round. In summer, a heavy canopy of rhododendrons keeps the air cool; in fall, leaf litter can hide divots and dips, making the route hazardous for running. Winter can bring snow. These changes affect the same basic out-and-back in different ways: the shaded summer canopy, obscured fall footing, and possible winter snow are useful factors when choosing a season and pace. NPS
