Start with the landscape in view
The Volcanoes Trail begins at the Volcanoes Day Use Area parking lot and passes JA Volcano before reaching a scenic overlook, then heads toward Vulcan Volcano and returns to the lot. Sweeping views of Albuquerque and the Rio Grande Valley accompany the route; the overlook also faces the Sandia Mountains. There are no petroglyphs at this day use area. NPS
The full trail is an easy-to-moderate loop of About 3 1/2 miles round trip. The shorter JA Volcano and Albuquerque Overlook option is 1 mile round trip from the lot and back, rated easy, with two shaded rest areas and benches. It is a useful choice for a view-focused walk without continuing around Vulcan. NPS
The Vulcan circuit
For a closer circuit, the Vulcan Volcano Loop is 2 miles from the north side of the lot around Vulcan and back, rated moderate. Find its start near the gate on the north side. The trail along Vulcan’s eastern base can be difficult to find; a gradual incline up the east side leads to a level, mini-volcanic valley on the north side. NPS
At the Y on Vulcan’s northwest side, go left (south); at the next Y, go left again for an up-close look at the well-preserved cinder cone. The route descends and continues south on an old road back to the parking lot. The natural earth surface includes inclines over volcanic rock, and the trails are not stroller or wheelchair accessible. NPS
Keep to the trail around the cones
The trail approaches the cones as closely as possible without causing further resource damage. Native peoples believe hiking to the tops desecrates this sacred landscape, so the route does not go to the peaks. Respecting that boundary gives the walk a particular shape: it follows the landforms at their base and preserves the cones as cultural places as well as geological features. NPS
Plan for sun, water, and access
No water is available at the day use area, so bring plenty. The parking lot is open 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. daily and may close early for severe weather; the area itself is officially open from sunrise to sunset. Outside the parking lot’s opening hours, visitors may park outside the gate and enter during the area’s sunrise-to-sunset visiting hours. NPS
The site is 12.5 miles from the visitor center by road and takes around 20 minutes to reach. Bicycles are not allowed on the trails. Leashed pets are allowed, but must be controlled and their waste carried out. NPS
