The lifepod sets the scale
The crash leaves a lifepod on an alien ocean. Early travel is bounded by oxygen: gathering materials and returning safely are part of the same dive. Those materials gradually support diving equipment, vehicles, and underwater habitats. Official Steam description
Reefs and kelp forests contrast with plateaus, trenches, caves, lava fields, and bioluminescent rivers. Depth is only one difference between these environments; their terrain gives the player different spaces to investigate as equipment improves. Official Steam description
A base becomes a decision point
The 2022 Living Large update brought the Large Room, Glass Dome, and surface hatches from Below Zero into the original Subnautica. Those additions expand what can be constructed in the first game: rooms, glazed enclosures, and entrances become choices within the same habitat-building system. Unknown Worlds: habitats and navigation
Unknown Worlds’ historical Machinery Update explains the Scanner Room as a search tool for selected nearby resources. Two exterior cameras can be piloted remotely. That division between surveying and collecting is useful: the room helps locate a search area, while the diver still needs to reach and retrieve what is found. Unknown Worlds: Scanner Room design
Choose tools for the distance ahead
The same Machinery document describes Cyclops proximity sensors, a hull camera, and functioning lockers. Together, those systems make the submersible a platform for observing its surroundings and carrying supplies. The account records a particular stage of the vehicle’s development, rather than promising that every old patch detail is a current rule. Unknown Worlds: Scanner Room design
The PRAWN Suit offers another set of capabilities through mining drills, torpedo launchers, propulsion cannons, and grappling hooks. Selecting a module changes the kind of work the suit can attempt, giving equipment a role beyond simply extending swimming distance. Official Steam description
Light, risk, and the return
Night changes predator encounters, making departure time another consideration alongside depth and distance. A familiar area can present different risks after dark, while further exploration gradually reveals more of the planet’s history. Official Steam description
Living Large also made navigation pings visible while piloting the Cyclops and added pinned recipes, improved Air Bladder functionality, and optional PDA pausing. These changes connect underwater travel with information management: a player can keep track of a destination or a crafting goal while preparing the next excursion.
