The Loop is the finish on the road
At Logan Pass, the Highline begins across Going-to-the-Sun Road from the Continental Divide sign. The commonly described route to The Loop is 11.8 miles one way. Its endpoint is a road hairpin, not the completion of a circular walking route. NPS records substantial ascent along the way as well as a greater overall descent. Route source
That distinction should be settled before choosing a start time. A walker who assumes “Loop” means returning to the same car can discover the real transport problem after a long day on exposed trail.
Keep the base route separate from the extra climbs
Grinnell Glacier Overlook, Swiftcurrent Lookout and Granite Park Chalet are well-known names attached to Highline itineraries. NPS treats them as side trips that change the quoted route statistics. Decide which are part of the day instead of borrowing the base distance and adding every appealing detour. Route source
A shorter out-and-back from Logan Pass is another legitimate itinerary. It can sample the traverse without requiring the descent to The Loop, although the return along the same exposed terrain still needs its own time allowance.
What changed at Logan Pass in 2026
The 2026 pilot limited ordinary Logan Pass parking to three hours, using a timestamped permit. That makes ordinary parking an unsuitable foundation for an all-day Highline itinerary. Specific exceptions existed for qualifying wilderness and chalet overnight plans; they should not be assumed to apply to a day walk. Route source
The 2026 Logan Pass shuttle used ticketing and wristband validation before the hike. The Loop was a return-pickup location for eligible riders, rather than a place to begin the ticketed service. Missing the last shuttle left no other public-transport connection. Route source
A dated system, not next summer’s promise
The published 2026 shuttle season ended on 7 September. It is already over at this edition’s October check, and the pilot does not establish the following year’s arrangements. Rebuild the transport plan from the next official operating notice before treating the point-to-point route as available. The Loop itself has toilets but no water. Route source
