Begin with the lava-field circle

From the Landmannalaugar hut and camping area, the Laugahraun circle gives a compact introduction to the highlands. The Iceland Touring Association lists 4.8 kilometres and roughly one-and-a-half to two hours. Dark lava lies against the coloured mountain slopes, making the changing rock the walk’s central subject. The hut sits at about 550 metres near the edge of the lava. It is also a starting or finishing point for the much longer Laugavegur trek. That shared location does not make the little circuit a fragment that must be extended to feel complete. Route source

Brennisteinsalda and Bláhnúkur change the outing

The association lists a Brennisteinsalda extension separately and describes Bláhnúkur as a more challenging four-hour walk. Their slopes give the lava circuit a dramatic backdrop, but climbing them is a route choice with additional effort. Do not automatically add an extension’s advertised distance to the circle without checking where the routes overlap. Route source

The lower loop is particularly useful for seeing the contrast between rough lava and the smoother gullies beyond it. A visit can concentrate on those textures without requiring a summit just because one is visible from camp.

The road approach can be the larger commitment

The northern F26/F208 approach, the western F225 approach and the southern F208 route have different river-crossing implications. The P1 parking area avoids driving the final river crossing, with a pedestrian bridge continuing to the main area. This is useful information when comparing a legal, suitable vehicle with a summer highland bus. Route source

Ordinary access is generally a late-June-to-mid-September matter, subject to road opening. The hut operator explicitly distinguishes winter conditions from a normal rental-4x4 journey. A two-hour walk in an itinerary does not make an October drive to its trailhead routine. Route source

Hut, parking and hot brook

The hut’s current information lists advance daytime parking reservations for private and rental vehicles in the 2026 system. Check the dated rules for the intended season. At the hot brook, use the wooden walkway over the bog and follow the prohibition on soap and glass containers. Route source

The surrounding ground is part of the experience, not expendable space between a car and a pool. Staying with the established paths keeps the small circuit focused on the landscape it came to see.
