Choose the ridge crossing or Pedra Rija

Pico do Areeiro rises to 1,818 metres, with PR1 continuing through Madeira’s central mountains toward Pico Ruivo at 1,862 metres. The current official description gives 6.1 kilometres one way and about three hours for PR1 itself. The route works around Pico das Torres, using volcanic-tuff tunnels and steep rock-cut steps rather than climbing that summit. Route source

A shorter visit reaches Miradouro da Pedra Rija, 1.2 kilometres from Areeiro, and returns the same way. Beyond that point, the full route operates one way toward Ruivo. The short outing and ridge crossing have different bookings and entirely different return arrangements. Route source Route source

The route ends on a mountain

The final approach reaches the Casa de Abrigo area below Pico Ruivo before the summit. Ruivo is not a roadside finish. IFCN directs walkers to leave by PR1.2 toward Achada do Teixeira or PR1.1 toward Ilha; it does not supply transport back to the beginning. Route source Route source

Using the published 2.8 kilometres for PR1.2 makes an Areeiro–Ruivo–Achada do Teixeira walk approximately 8.9 kilometres by simple addition. The three-hour PR1 estimate does not include that exit or the onward transfer. Agree on the collection point before starting into the ridge. Route source Route source

Reopening changed the old advice

The full route reopened on 1 May 2026, and the Portuguese IFCN chronology confirms daily opening from 26 June. The current arrangement is a full traverse beyond Pedra Rija, with a different road exit from the starting point. Build the transport plan around that geometry. Route source Route source

Temporary conditions can still change access. A current open listing is a dated operational statement, not a guarantee that wind, rain or a later repair will leave the walk available on every booked day.

Book the walk actually intended

All visitors need the relevant SIMplifica reservation, including those exempt from a fee. Select either the short Pedra Rija visit or the full crossing, then arrange the matching transport. A booking for one is not a substitute for the other. Route source

The tunnels, stairs and mountain exit make PR1 a specific logistical undertaking. The rewarding part is moving through the central ridge; treating it as a quick return from a scenic car park misses both the route’s character and its current rules.
