Start with the official PR6 distance
PR6 begins at Rabaçal on ER105 and follows the 25 Fontes outing into Madeira’s Laurissilva landscape. The current Visit Madeira page gives 4.3 kilometres one way, or 8.6 kilometres return, with a three-hour estimate. The famous pool is not a viewpoint immediately beside the road. Route source
As the route enters the valley, the relationship between water channel, forest and slope gives it a different character from Madeira’s high-ridge walks. The levada is the route’s organising feature; the destination is Lagoa das 25 Fontes, fed by springs associated with Paul da Serra above.
The springs and the valley
The official description looks across the Ribeira da Janela valley and into the Laurissilva forest. At the destination, multiple small water sources gather around the pool. The attraction is the combination of that enclosed basin and the forested approach, rather than a single large waterfall. Route source
Take time to understand the changing views between the channel and the valley. The outward and return walks reuse much of the same corridor, so the scenery is also a way to recognise progress instead of treating every wooded stretch as identical.
Risco is the other branch
PR6.1 leads to Risco, a tall vertical fall against dark rock. It shares the beginning of the outing but has a separate destination and official listing. Its published three-kilometre return figure should not simply be added to PR6’s entire 8.6-kilometre return: the approaches overlap. Route source
Choose whether the aim is the pool, Risco or an explicitly mapped combination. That keeps the decision about extra walking visible before reaching the branch, rather than allowing the familiar pair of names to conceal an unspecified route.
A directional notice to reopen before visiting
When checked for this edition, Visit Madeira marked PR6 open and said a normally one-way section was temporarily operating in both directions. The notice supplied no end date. Read the current version before interpreting signs or advice encountered elsewhere. Route source
