Count backward from the arch

Hole-in-the-Wall is about 1.5 miles north of the Rialto Beach parking area. The park suggests allowing roughly an hour for that outbound beach walk and reaching the formation at least half an hour before the lowest tide. A plan based on arrival at the car park misses the most important appointment. Route source Route source

The three-mile return distance looks small beside an inland hiking route. Pebbles, sand, driftwood and time spent picking a line along the shore make the comparison unreliable. The beach itself determines the pace.

From the driftwood to Ellen Creek

Rialto’s initial access is short, with a seasonal accessible ramp leading toward the pebble beach. Turning north brings the walker toward Ellen Creek and the offshore sea stacks. Ellen Creek also marks the end of the area in which leashed pets are allowed, about half a mile from the start. The allowance does not extend to Hole-in-the-Wall. Route source

The large pieces of driftwood give the upper shore a distinctive outline, but the route should stay responsive to waves and available beach. A strandline is evidence of where water has reached, not a permanent guarantee of a dry walking corridor.

Reaching the formation is not the same as passing through it

The park recommends tides below one foot for good tidepooling; minus tides expose more of the intertidal landscape. A low tide around three feet may reveal comparatively little. Those figures describe viewing opportunities, not a universal height at which every passage is safe. Route source

Never continue through the arch once water covers its floor. The park also warns about falling rock beneath it, sneaker waves and slippery algae-covered stone. A low-tide visit still needs room for the return as water begins to rise. The walk can be successful without entering the opening. Route source

Reach Rialto by Mora Road

Mora Road runs five paved miles from the Washington 110/La Push Road junction to Rialto. Olympic’s road table showed it open when checked for this edition, with an October 2026 update. Reopen that table for a future visit; a coastal road’s status is dated information, just as a tide prediction is tied to a particular day. Route source
